Manufacturing Journalist, Thomas R. Cutler, recently profiled in the current issue of AutomationMedia.com, how Fender Musical Instruments, one of many musical instrument firms, turned to Integrated Systems Group, ISG, as a method for organizing and automating their distribution center.
This 550,000 square foot distribution facility was completed by ISG. It contains approximately 2 miles of conveyor, a broken case order selection module (floor plus two levels) and a full case picking module. It has Very Narrow Aisle (VNA) selective racking providing over 13,000 of the 21,000 pallet positions in the facility. The conveyor and automatic sortation system efficiently handles cartons from 9 inches long to 52 inches long at substantial throughput rates.
Fender chose to keep equipment and technologies that were working well—wireless printers and handheld scanners, a warehouse management system (WMS), very-narrow-aisle turret trucks for bulk storage—and to introduce some significant upgrades:
2 miles of powered conveyor, a high-speed sorter, a multi-level pick module, and significant software changes. Fender increased throughput by 30% while improving order accuracy, all without adding labor. The system recommended is scalable, so adding capacity will be easy if sales continue their double-digit growth.

Sweetwater is another musical instrument company that also required some distribution center organization assistance from ISG. They have a 32,000 square foot Distribution Center for Musical Instruments and Sound Equipment consisting of:
§         Data and Operational Analysis
§         LEEDS Compliant Design & Installation
§         Broken Case Order Selection with approximately 525 SKU locations
§         Bin Shelving Pick Area with approximately 1350 SKU locations
§         Order selection and packing conveyor system
§         Sortation and Software
§         Packing and Manifesting Stations
§         Pallet racking with approximately 1800 locations
§         Guitar racking with approximately 1300 locations
Integrated Systems Group (ISG), www.integratedsysgroup.com, a division of Speedrack Products Group Ltd., is an integral part of a company with decades of material handling experience. It is one of the largest companies in the industry and enjoys a very strong financial position. ISG’s “forward thinking” engineering, design, and project management staff make it possible to design, develop, and deliver highly functional and cost-effective quality material handling systems to meet client’s specific needs every time.
According to Tim Bastic, Vice-President of ISG, “We follow a meticulous step-by-step process that starts with a complete analysis of a client’s current operations and end objectives. Time is spent to determine what operational enhancements and technologies are needed to frame the system configuration for present and future distribution requirements. This thorough analysis guards against false starts and the ill-timed development of budget-wasting, non-functional system concepts.”
ISG knows that no two projects are alike.  The results are system designs, implementations, technology and project management strategies specifically based on short and long term objectives.  While there is enough technology in the industry to move the world, ISG will only design and implement applications that will help achieve clients’ objectives.
The results are selecting the right technology to ensure the best fit, best results and least amount of investment. Without pre-conceived ideas, ISG chooses from an almost endless list of applications from Conveyor and Sortation, Voice, RF and Pick-To-Light, Batch and Cluster Picking Methodologies, Warehouse Control Software, Barcode and RFID Scanning, Carousels, Cubing Software, Weight Technologies, Automatic Labeling applications and many more.

Nowadays with the current retail climate and ever increasing competition on the high street, the need for a closer view of stock levels and the ability to maintain stock at optimum levels has never been greater. For many years independent retailers have relied on the trusty cash register and ‘had a reasonable of their stock position’

Modern EPOS Sytems (Electronic Point of Sale) allow greater efficiencies and can improve all round margins. Inbuilt stock control allows retailers to pinpoint poorly performing products/suppliers/staff and allow them to rectify any issues.

Many Back Office applications have the facility to either link directly into supplier websites or to email/fax purchase orders through directly. This means that much less time is taken with administrative tasks.

Systems allow businesses to integrate data from EPOS with data from handheld scanners, which means you can track barcoded products on the journey from your suppliers to the warehouse to the store to the final point of sale. You can then identify where goods are being held up, compare the performance of different suppliers and their delivery times – and improve on the results.

Build a database of customers, review their spending patterns and run marketting campaigns based on customer spending history or based on the type of products bought historically.

With e-tailing gaining ground and taking market share from the high street, linking your EPOS system to your website provides online customers with rapid, up-to-date stock information. If stock runs out, EPOS can update the site to show that it is unavailable and warn potential customers that there will be a delay in delivery or offer an alternative.

Choosing the Right EPOS System?

EPOS particularly benefits organisations with a large throughput of goods to a large customer base. The larger the organisation the more sophisticated the EPOS solution should be, but it may not be necessary for smaller organisations to invest in complex solutions.

Software-based solutions
Your existing PC equipment may be able to run an EPOS application, costing around GBP 350. Additional hardware (printer, magnetic card reader, POS keyboard, keylock, operator monitor, cash drawer and customer display) is increasingly available in plug and play form.

Software packages linking EPOS to your accounting system
These cost around GBP 500 per terminal. However, the back office PC will need its own software and you may need to buy additional modules for extras like Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT), label printing or remote access. This approach can be cheaper and more flexible than buying an off-the-shelf system, but you may need advice on setting it up.

Stand-alone EPOS systems
These cost around GBP 5,000. You receive a specialised EPOS terminal, software, a printer and a networked back office PC. Such systems often have XML or EDI links for connecting with your website or back-office systems. This would be suitable for a company with one or two retail stores, for example.

Being a worker in a warehouse for a long time, I have used a lot of inventory machine and want to share the experience of using them, hoping that is useful to you guys. Firstly, I want to introduce the types of inventory machine. There are three kinds of inventory machine in all, gun-style, portable-style and fixed-style.

I used the barcode scanner of Symbol at first, it was LS1203, and it can be used to scan 1D barcode. The warehouse I worked in is not very big, so it is enough for me to scan stuff in the whole warehouse. Symbol is a famous and import brand, the scanner of this brand is quite expensive, about the double price higher than that made in China. But it never cause quality problems, so it is still deserve to be recommended.

Then, the company I worked for was expanded, the warehouse becomes bigger than before. There were more stuff for me to check, so use the barcode scanner with wire bothered me a lot. So I reflected that problem to my leader, after he adopted my suggestion, he gave me a wireless barcode adapter, it is Sumlung BA10. That is quite practical and cost not very much. I was so surprised hearing that Sumlung is the first company to create wireless barcode adapter, I thought it  was a abroad brand at first! It is easy for me to inventory stuff within about 10m. The most important is there is no need to buy another wireless barcode scanner, and we can save money for company.

After a long time, the company become more complex, and they hired another administer to help us checking products in the end of the year. In that situation, they had to buy another wireless barcode scanner. Fortunately, the new one is very clever, and a good idea occurred to him.He usually used intelligent mobile phone, set by windows system. He knew the wireless scanner made by Sumlung can transport the data to intelligent mobile phone. It is enough for us to administrate the information with Excel. So we were about to buy the barcode scanner adapter of Sumlung at first, and added it on barcode scanner with wire. When we purchased the scanner adapter, the clerk told us Sumlung had invented a new kind of mobile phone barcode scanner, which contained the same function as the wireless scanner before, and it can be just covered on the mobile phone. So we don’t need to hold a barcode scanner on one hand and hold a mobile phone on the other one.

Eventually, we adopt the idea of buying the MS30 for our company, its price is a little more than 1000 yuan, and it is quite practical, too. So I personally recommend MS30, if you have a intelligent mobile phone, it is the best choice!

Supply Chain Management and its parts Warehouse Management System, Consignments, Shipment Picking and Packing, Delivery Trucks Route Optimization is based on Barcode scanning, RFID, real time or batch mode integration of scanned data with Microsoft Dynamics GP Distributions set of modules.  Distributions series in Great Plains include Sales Order Processing, Purchase Order Processing, Inventory Control and extensions to these modules, such as Purchase Confugurator (simple MRP solution).  When you are selecting WMS or another part of SCM, it is often reasonable to expect some customization budget, as in such processes as Sales Order Allocation, Merchandize Purchase Receipts companies have their own unique way of competing on the SCM network.  In this small paper we would like to emphasize how WMS could be realized for Microsoft Dynamics GP:
1. WMS as extension to Sales Order Processing, Purchase Order Processing and Inventory Control.  Sometimes you see also Bill of Materials (if you do picking and packing or simple manufacturing) or even several modules from Great Plains Manufacturing suite.  Inventory intersite transfers, physical count, adjustments are done in WMS by exposing Inventory Transactions to Barcode scanning.  Sales Order Fulfillment is typically done in SOP Sales Order by enabling manual line allocation via barcode scanning.  Similar in Purchase Order processing module, you expose to barcoding Purchase Receipt for WMS inventory replenishment functionality
2. Selecting WMS Technology Partner.  While Dynamics GP pool of resellers could include CPA oriented organizations, typically tuned to do Corporate ERP Software licenses sale and generic implementation – if your goal is real Barcoding, Logistics and WMS modules and logic implementation may require additional homework and background check in picking your Microsoft Dynamics GP VAR and ISV.  Barcoding itself is pretty challenging in such technologies as RFID, handheld devices, programming for Barcode scanner Operating System (fitting to small screen dimensions and scaling down WMS client).  You should be sure that your proposed Dynamics GP Barcode Partner has large number of SCM and WMS successful implementations under its belt
3. How to get additional info?  Please, call us 1-866-528-0577, 1-630-961-5918 or email us help@albaspectrum.com  We’ll try to do the best for local service in Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, California, Texas, Georgia from our offices in Chicago, Naperville, San Diego, Los Angeles, Houston, Atlanta
